A NEW PRESS TAKES FLIGHT

Author short story Collections are like a party in a book. Meet other writers. Promote your work!

WHAT DO WE PUBLISH?  We create dynamic, literary, and artistic paperback and digital ebook collections and anthologies, in both poetry and short fiction. We emphasize fun, beauty, art, and artists in our books. We are known for our design as well as high-quality craftsmanship. Our books are rated 14+ for adults and teen-friendly. They are entertaining, wonderful, and either make you think, or make you feel good.

WE WANT TO SHARE YOUR WORK.  We want to connect with new and diverse voices, share with you about your writing and creative life. Being a traditional trademarked press, our books are eligible for book prizes and publication annual contests, and they are eligible to be carried in book stores and libraries. We are a family-owned press with a small staff and volunteers who are all supporting us as we grow. We publish collections full of smart, passionate, and evocative short fiction, or brave, provocative and head-turning poetry.  We run teen contests for teen writers, and publish work in fantasy, science fiction and magical realism and related genres for young audiences.  Our new poet-in-residence program produces one new collection per year of an emerging poet's new work. Find out more about us!

ARE WE OPEN TO UNSOLICITED MANUSCRIPTS, OR, DO WE PRINT BOOKS FOR YOU?  No. We are a trademarked professional press in our third year.  So sorry, but we are not open to unsolicited queries, submissions, or proposals for manuscripts, except through our open calls for submissions (through Submittable.com.)  We do promote new and diverse voices (writers without previous publishing credits) in our poetry and fiction collections, and we are proud to do so.  Though we don't print books for clients, we know people who do, so we will keep updating our site with resources. We have just begun a bulletin board with resources for editors and writers on our Ketchupedia page.

WHAT SUBMISSIONS TO WE ACCEPT AND WHERE?  We host several writing contests for poetry, art, short stories, and creative nonfiction each year through Submittable. Submit often and share our contests. We pride ourselves on having each submission read by 2 to 3 expert judges as well as offering positive and encouraging individual feedback on as many of our entries as possible. Click on each contest link for more details. We only accept submissions through Submittable.

See the results of past projects on our Book page.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO HEAR BACK? It can take 3 to 4 months to hear back from us after a contest series closes. Should your work be chosen for a collection, it can take up to 12 months to finish a book project from contest opening to illustration, including layout, copy editing, design, distribution up to a publication launch party day. Follow our blog or news and events for more info.

WE ACCEPT SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS: And, we are willing to reprint a story or poem for which an author retains copyright.  We stand for excellent writing everywhere, and particularly on our printed pages!

Fast Forward: Poems and Art about your Fave Historical Poet

Fast Forward: Did you ever wonder what a historical poet might be doing today? Or have you felt a connection to a poet of a past, written in their style, or lyrically celebrated them in some way? Then this contest is for you. Whether you time travel your historical poet the present, or enter their world in the past; whether you try out their style or comment on their life; whether you take on their voice or just tell-all tabloid-style; whether you address the addictive technology of our poetic future or an important modern-day movement, try out this time travel call for poetry and art that speak to both past and present.

We hope you enjoy this history lovers prompt for the ultimate poetry nerd. We will also invite you to share by text or video. We will share on our Youtube channel, and post it on our website of you reading or performing your poem. Find an old favorite, or discover a poet you never knew before.

What can you win? One poem a month will be published in our blog with Flying Ketchup Press in 2021 as the poet spotlight of the month as well as being included on one of our first digital magazines. You'll get social media and blog all about you with the online publication of your poem (with permission). Y

ou will also win a free membership to our site with resources, discussion groups, and a place to advertise your poetry, editing, speaking or other work. Finalists are automatically entered into a pool of poets our editors will choose to invite to a chapbook or full manuscript for publication and our 2020 anthology, as well as our 2021 Vision award for inspiring the title of next year's collection.
